The Role of Emotional Intelligence for Women of Color Leaders

Career Advancement

One out of every five Americans is a woman of color, and according to a survey, by 2060, women of color will constitute the majority of all women in the country. However, due to persistent systemic oppression, women of color face multiple intersecting identities that pose challenges to their advancement and attainment of leadership positions. It is high time to redefine leadership by empowering women of color and other historically underrepresented groups. To truly grasp the transformative nature of leadership, we need to embrace a more inclusive approach.

While diversity has progressed in society, many organizations still struggle to implement the necessary cultural shifts that move beyond superficial diversity to foster cultures that embody diversity, equity, inclusion, and intersectional social justice. Women of color possess remarkable resilience and are capable of flourishing despite institutional bias and racism when they tap into their emotional intelligence, using it not just for survival but also to thrive. Women of color can overcome present and future challenges, and their ability to do so is crucial in a modern world that requires emotionally aware leaders to bring about positive changes in workplaces and society as a whole. In this blog, you will explore how empowered women of color can utilize emotional intelligence to enhance their leadership skills.

Understanding Emotional Intelligence (EI):

Emotional intelligence refers to the capacity to be aware of, comprehend, and control our emotions, as well as those of others. Psychologists have identified twelve abilities within four domains that contribute to emotional intelligence.

Let’s take a look at the various EQ domains in detail that can empower women of color in leadership roles to build credibility at work.

Self-Awareness

The competencies within each domain of emotional intelligence are interconnected, with self-awareness being the foundation. A great starting point in discovering your true self is identifying your core values. Understanding your values helps build confidence as a woman of color leader. It is essential to pay attention to the messages conveyed by your emotions. What do your emotions reveal about your unwavering principles, and how well do they align with your actions and choices in life?

For women of color, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of their identity and how they are perceived by others, particularly in environments where racism and bigotry may be prevalent. Recognize that your leadership style reflects who you are as an individual. By embracing self-awareness and understanding how your identity shapes your leadership approach, you can navigate challenges and make meaningful contributions.

Self-Management

To overcome challenges as a woman of color in leadership, focus on self-management and development of self-awareness. Making a conscious choice to be mindful, rather than acting on autopilot, is a powerful strategy in this domain. Mindfulness involves being actively intentional and aware of your body sensations, thoughts, feelings, and the environment around you. It also entails recognizing and accepting ideas and emotions without passing judgment.

Practicing mindfulness can take various forms, such as formal meditation or informal moments of being fully present. For example, you can cultivate mindfulness by paying close attention to the sensory experience of enjoying a delicious meal in a beautiful setting.

When it comes to self-management, women of color should prioritize understanding how to effectively manage themselves in order to be their authentic best, rather than trying to conform to societal norms or expectations. It is about embracing and expressing your true self, rather than focusing on fitting in. By honing self-management skills, women of color can navigate challenges, make empowered choices, and thrive in their leadership roles.

Community Awareness

Self-management and self-awareness are closely linked to social awareness. To leverage this domain, it’s important to enhance your listening and observational skills. Engage your eyes, ears, and heart when listening to others, making them feel truly seen and heard. Pay attention to subtle cues such as tone, inflection, volume, facial expressions, and body language. Cultivate empathy and suspend judgment, allowing you to genuinely understand and appreciate another person’s experience. Empathy facilitates authentic connections and paves the way for mutual understanding.

To foster inclusive behaviors, women of color can strategically challenge the existing status quo of racism by utilizing their social awareness. They can actively expand and strengthen their networks, aiming for solidarity and allyship. By proactively engaging in conversations, advocating for marginalized communities, and promoting diversity and inclusion, women of color can drive positive change at all levels of society.

Relationship Administration

Relationship management, which encompasses interpersonal dynamics, is the final domain. How effectively do you build relationships and communicate? To excel in this domain, you must cultivate self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness. By developing these skills, you can establish genuine connections with others.

Enhancing your ability to give and receive feedback is a crucial aspect of mastering relationship management, particularly for women of color. Effective feedback is a valuable gift, requiring proficiency in all domains. Take a proactive approach by seeking input from as many individuals as possible. When feedback is offered or received with empathy, it enhances relationships and promotes awareness, leading to progress. The more skilled you become at receiving feedback, the better equipped you’ll be to provide valuable input. Women of color need to deliberate on how to build and strengthen relationships to thrive and advance.

By continuously refining their relationship management skills, embracing feedback, and nurturing connections with others, women of color can create a supportive network that fosters growth and success.

Let’s bring it all together;

By developing and employing emotional intelligence, women of color can advance as leaders by becoming more adept at managing the difficulties of overcoming the stereotypes, biases, and assumptions that come with being marginalized and advancing the destruction of oppressive structures. Leadership is required to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and intersectional social justice.

Women of color are therefore the best candidates to serve as the leaders of social and cultural reform, positioning them for success. What do you think, as a woman of color, about how we may envision ourselves developing as leaders by utilizing all 12 emotional intelligence competencies?
